English & Math Placement at Highline

The purpose of placement is to check your skills so you can succeed in your courses. Many programs at Highline require you to meet certain reading and math skills before you enroll. We know that everyone is different, so we provide various ways to evaluate your skills to meet your needs.

To start the admissions process, you need to find out your starting levels in English and Math. At Highline, we have various ways to place you into English and math classes: document review, informed placement, and testing.

Where Do I Start?

Meet with Entry Advising to discuss the many placement options and before taking a placement test. Entry Advising is located in Building 6 in the Upper Lobby on the 2nd floor, or email entryadvising@highline.edu.

Placement Options

The best and simplest way to get placed at the right level is to let us assess work you’ve already done. Our entry advising team can determine your placement by reviewing your recent high school or college transcripts, or recent test scores such as SAT, ACT, AP, IB, CI or SBA. We can use unofficial copies to place you!

If you don’t have recent transcripts or test scores, Informed Placement is a great option. IP is a questionnaire that guides you through a series of questions and activities reflecting on your prior experiences with reading, writing and/or math. IP will help you make an informed decision about the placement level at which you will be both successful and challenged. Our entry advising team can determine if this an option for you!

If you completed a placement test at another Washington State community or technical college within the two years, you may request placement based on reciprocity.  We will place you at the equivalent level that the other institution placed you at. Your documentation submitted must show the English and/or math placement for the other institution, not just the score numbers. Contact Entry Advising for how to submit your placement testing scores.
