Highline College Mathematics Department cares about the success of all our students. We want to help you identify exactly what courses you need for your degree. The first step is to identify whether your degree requires college-level mathematics.

For students majoring in science, math, engineering, and technology (STEM).
The math pathway for students majoring in science, math, engineering, and technology (STEM) includes Precalculus I (Math& 141) and Precalculus II (Math& 142) and the Calculus sequence. We also offer preparatory classes for students who need extra support before enrolling in the STEM Math Pathway, such as Intermediate Algebra for Calculus (Math 98) or Essentials of Intermediate Algebra (Math 91). Different STEM majors have different math requirements, so please check with your faculty adviser to ensure you take the courses you need.

For students seeking a bachelor’s degree in business.
The Math Pathway for students seeking a bachelor’s degree in business includes two business math classes College Algebra (Math 111) and also may include Business Calculus (Math& 148). Business majors are often required to take statistics, and it is recommended they take Business 210 (Statistical Analysis) rather than Intro Statistics (Math& 146). Please check with your faculty adviser to ensure you take the courses you need. If you are seeking an AAS in Business from Highline, you may not need to take any college-level math courses. If you need extra support before enrolling in your required math course, we offer preparatory courses for students who need extra support, such as Essentials of Intermediate Algebra (Math 091) and Introduction to Algebra (Math 81).

For nursing majors.
The Math Pathway for nursing majors includes Introduction to Statistics (Math& 146) and may also include College Algebra (Math 111). Please check with your faculty adviser to ensure you take the courses you need. We also offer preparatory courses for students who need extra support, such as Essentials of Intermediate Algebra (Math 091) and Introduction to Algebra (Math 81).

For students needing a general education math (GEM) course, most take either Introduction to Statistics (Math& 146), Math in Society (Math& 107), or College Algebra (Math 111). Please check with your faculty adviser to ensure you take the courses you need! We also offer preparatory courses for students who need extra support, such as Essentials of Intermediate Algebra (Math 091) and Introduction to Algebra (Math 81).

The mathematics requirement for education majors depends on where you plan to get your bachelor’s degree. Students planning to get their education AAS or BAS from Highline should talk to a faculty in the department of education at Highline. If you plan to transfer to another college for your bachelor’s degree, you may enroll in Number Theory for Teachers (Math 180) or Geometry for K-8 Teachers (Math 181). Please talk with your faculty adviser to make sure you take the right college-level math course, as the requirements can vary by college.

The Exploratory Pathway
For students who are NOT interested in STEM, we recommend exploration through Math& 146: Statistics. For students who MAY be interested in STEM, we encourage beginning down the STEM calculus pathway of Math 141 → 142 → 151 Please speak to your advisor to confirm the best choices for your interests and background.
