On the Front Line of Student Advocacy at Highline College

Demetrius Price understands how to look out for his fellow students. The 35-year-old Highline College student from Auburn is a leader in the school’s community, through his work at the Center for Cultural & Inclusive Excellence (CCIE).

There, Price is a Community Resource Consultant, (CRC), a crucial frontline role helping students navigate resources available to them, including tapping into the large network of staff and faculty who want all students to succeed.

According to Price, working so closely with students provides him with a unique perspective as to what they need. 

In fact, when Highline's Associated Students of Highline College (ASHC) held their annual Legislative Breakfast in December last year, Price was one of the student representatives who addressed the legislators about issues affecting students.

“I spoke about the food insecurities that students face and how it can directly impact one's mental health by way of causing a list of issues that can affect one's enrollment there at the campus,” Price said. 

He described how having nourishing food is as important as having access to clean water, shelter and hygiene. The “basic essentials.”

Price is an AAS Drafting Design student and after graduation, he hopes to use his skills to draft plans for his future home, made for sustainable living. 

The Drafting Design program prepares students to take ideas, sketches and specifications and bring them to life. Students work with industry software and other hands-on applications to learn industry standards for creating professional drawings in the architecture and mechanical fields.

Being at Highline, Price said he’s inspired by the difference college can make, “knowing how many young adults lack basic life skills and how college can step in and make a huge impact on one’s life by shedding light on the gray areas that can improve student life.”

He elaborated that his role at the Center for Cultural & Inclusive Excellence is something he’d recommend to other students looking to step into a leadership role at the college.

“Being in this position has put me in a place to look at the world differently through the eyes of a student and be more concerned for the youth that will inherit the world we live in and really see things for what it really is.”
