Transfer Course Equivalency Guides

How to Transfer Courses to Highline

Credits From WA State Public Colleges and Universities May Transfer to Highline

These guides are intended to help you predict how your credits might transfer. Actual transfer credits will be determined based on your individual transcript, limits on the number of credits allowed to transfer, and how courses fit with the degree or certificate you are working towards.

Highline will only accept transfer credits for classes with a grade of D/1.0 or better with a combined Highline/transfer GPA of 2.0 or better. Visit our Transcript Evaluation page for more information.

High School Transcript Credits

Advanced Placement: Credit for an Advanced Placement (AP) is awarded for a score of 3 or higher.  Credit will be awarded based on official AP results, not transcript notation.

International Baccalaureate: Credit for an International Baccalaureate (IB) is awarded for Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) exam score of 4, 5, 6, or 7. Credit will be awarded based on official IB results, not transcript notation. Contact the IB organization to request an official transcript be sent directly to Highline College.

Cambridge International:  Credit will be awarded within the distribution area of the subject matter for each Cambridge International (CI) Examination for scores of E(e) on A and AS level. Credit will be awarded based on official Cambridge International Examination results, not transcript notation.  Duplicate credit for the same subject taken on different exams will not be granted.  No grades are posted for A-level exams

Math Course Notes:

  1.  Pacific Lutheran University:
    • Math 151 and Math 152 are 6 quarter credits. Taken together, they are equivalent to the content of Highline’s three quarter calculus sequence (MATH& 151, 152 and 153), however the total will be 3 quarter credits short of the full sequence. Please talk to us about how best to meet your specific degree requirements if you need the full calculus sequence and have taken it at PLU. Email incomingtranscripts@highline.edu.
  2. University of Puget Sound:
    • Math 180 and Math 181 are 6 quarter credits. Taken together, they are equivalent to the content of Highline’s three quarter calculus sequence (MATH& 151, 152 and 153), however the total will be 3 quarter credits short of the full sequence. Please talk to us about how best to meet your specific degree requirements if you need the full calculus sequence and have taken it at UPS. Email incomingtranscripts@highline.edu.
  3. Western Washington University:
    • 4 quarter credit math courses: Many of WWU’s math courses transfer to Highline as 4 quarter credits. This may cause a 1 credit gap in your degree requirements. Please speak to your adviser about your options if you have taken only one college level math course and it is marked in the table above as a 4 credit transfer equivalency.
  4. Washington State University:
    • Math 171 and Math 172 are 6 quarter credits. Taken together, they are equivalent to the content of Highline’s three quarter calculus sequence (MATH& 151, 152 and 153), however the total will be 3 quarter credits short of the full sequence. Please talk to us about how best to meet your specific degree requirements if you need the full calculus sequence and have taken it at WSU. Email incomingtranscripts@highline.edu.
    • Math 108 is 3 quarter credits. We can use your trigonometry course from WSU to help you get into calculus here at Highline, but it is too few credits to meet a 5 credit quantitative reasoning requirement for most degrees. Please talk with your adviser about your options if this is the only math course you have taken.
  5. Seattle University:
    • MATH 1022 is 2 quarter credits: Seattle U’s trigonometry course transfers to Highline as 2 quarter credits. This may cause a 3 credit gap in your degree requirements. Please speak to your adviser about your options if MATH 1022 is the only college level math course you have taken.

RN Prerequisite Notes:

  1. Central Washington University:
    • PSY 313 (Developmental Psychology) is 4 quarter credits.
Options:  (a.) retake the course at Highline; or, (b.) contact our psychology department coordinator for possible alternatives to earn an additional 1 credit.
    • ENG 101 (Composition I) is 4 quarter credits.
Options:  (a.) retake the course at Highline; or, (b.) work with Prior Learning Assessment by contacting the English Department Coordinator at Highline to bring your total credits up to 5.
  2. Eastern Washington University:
    • BIOL 232, BIOL 233 & BIOL 234 are all required. Credit for BIOL& 160, BIOL& 241 and BIOL& 242 will be given for the full sequence. Completing part of the sequence will result in general science distribution credits, which can apply towards transfer degree attainment, but will not meet Highline RN program prerequisites.
  3. Western Washington University:
    • Statistics courses offered at WWU are 4 quarter credits.
If you have taken MATH 240 (Introduction to Statistics) or MATH 341 (Probability and Statistical Inference) you will be 1 quarter credit short for the RN program.
Options: (a.) retake the course at Highline; or, (b.) work with Prior Learning Assessment to earn 5 credits of PLA for MATH& 146.
  4. University of Washington:
    • NURS 301 replaces B STR 301 as of 2018. Students may be given credit for Highline’s BIOL& 241 and BIOL& 242 if they have taken all three courses: BIOL 118, BIOL 119 and NURS 301 ; or, prior to 2018: BIOL 118, BIOL 119 and B STR 301.

Foreign Bachelor Degrees Equivalency

When you apply for Financial Aid through the FAFSA, you will be asked if you already have a bachelor degree. It is important to answer this honestly because it could result in having to pay back aid received and loss of future aid, but the government leaves it up to each US college to determine if a degree from another country is equivalent to a US bachelor degree or not. This is difficult because education systems vary from country to country. Visit International Transcript Evaluation for more information.

If you have a degree from outside the US and want to continue working in your field of training:
The Puget Sound Welcome Back Center provides support for internationally educated professionals entering the US job market in their field of study.
